Floor Lamps
Scandinavian floor lamps
A floor lamp brings light down to the height where people actually sit, beside a sofa, next to a reading chair or in the corner of a bedroom. Ferm Living’s floor lamps are made in linen, braided rattan, rippled opal glass, ceramic and powder-coated iron, from tall lamps with fabric shades to a low lamp that stands directly on the floor. Some are complete lamps. Others are a base and a shade, chosen to go together.
Most rooms are lit from above, and that is usually the problem. A ceiling light spreads the same light over everything, while a floor lamp puts it where it is needed. That is why a room with one good floor lamp often feels more finished than a room with a brighter ceiling.
Ferm Living’s floor lamps are built the Scandinavian way, with few materials and nothing added for show. Shades in linen and rattan soften the light, and bases in ceramic, marble and iron keep it steady. Heights run from a low lamp of around 14 inches to tall lamps of almost five feet, so there is a floor lamp for a low corner as well as for a reading chair.
Shades that tilt
Some of the floor lamps have a shade that can be tilted or turned. That matters beside a chair, where the light should fall on a page or a lap rather than spread into the room. Where a shade can be adjusted, it is stated in the product details.
More than one bulb
Some of the taller lamps hold two or three bulbs rather than one, set behind a single shade, so the light comes from more than one point.
A lamp that stands on the floor
Not every floor lamp is tall. One of the lamps here is a low piece in rippled opal glass on brass feet, made to stand directly on the floor, with a dimmer on the cord. Placed in a corner or beside a sofa, it lights the room from below.
Lamp bases and shades
A tall ceramic lamp base is sold on its own, and the long linen shades in this collection are made to fit it. The shade can be changed later without changing the base. For more ways to combine a base and a shade, compare the designer table lamps.
Help choosing
Before choosing a floor lamp, measure the space it will stand in and check where the outlet sits. Then decide what the lamp is for. For reading, look for a shade that can be adjusted. For a softer light in the evening, a linen or rattan shade spreads the light more gently. If there is no outlet within reach, one of the rechargeable portable lamps may suit the spot better.
