At ferm LIVING, it is our ambition to inspire people to live a more mindful and sustainable lifestyle. Our work with responsibility covers both environmental and social contexts. To us, this means buying less, buying better and using items for longer. That’s why we design products that are made to last – in terms of both function and aesthetics.
We value authentic design and clear functionality, working to create high-quality products made from responsible materials and with lasting aesthetic appeal. This Earth Day, we are taking a closer look at some of the ways that we incorporate Responsible thinking into our business.
In the design phase, where the first important decisions on a product are made, we employ a range of responsibility criteria for new products and take a cradle-to-grave approach to the life cycle of each design. We are dedicated to and continuously working on implementing even more responsible materials and ways of working in our future designs.
With each collection, we work to increase the number of RESPONSIBLE designs in our collection. We use RESPONSIBLE as a tag on our products to signify that a product is either FSC, GOTS or OSC 100/ Organic blended certified or produced in a recycled material, such as recycled glass and ceramics, recycled aluminium, recycled paper pulp or PET-yarn made from post-consumer plastic bottles.
Our new collection, Notable Moments, is no exception. New RESPONSIBLE materials like brown cotton, nettle fabric, recycled ceramic and cotton maché are now included due to either a low environmental footprint or the material being reused, which results in less use of virgin material.
A naturally occurring cotton variant with a characteristic brown colour that does not require dyeing, brown cotton fabric has a distinctive, coarser texture with an appealing hand feel. Hand spun and handwoven, the brown cotton fabric used for our products requires considerably less resources than traditional cotton.
Nettle fabric is a textile spun entirely from the common nettle plant. Able to grow and thrive on little water, nettles have a high growth rate and are a rapidly renewable material source that requires considerably less resources than traditional cotton farming.
Cotton mâché, also known as Katra, is an innovative and durable material made from 100% recycled pre-consumer cotton scraps. Similar to paper mâché but vastly more robust, cotton mâché is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Made to Last
Designing for longevity is the foundation for minimising our resource consumption and CO2 emissions. To ensure we move in the right direction, our Sustainability Manager works closely with the design and product teams, tracking progress and helping to identify opportunities to implement more sustainable solutions in both social and environmental contexts.
In order to establish a base from which future targets can be set, we have collaborated with Danish company Målbar using their Climate Screening Tool to measure the CO2e footprint of our products. We are currently onboarding our key suppliers to measure the climate impact of each product produced for us, taking every step of the manufacturing process into account—from the raw materials used to the arrival of a finished product at our warehouse. This process provides us with valuable data that will help us to set future strategic targets with our manufacturing partners to lower our climate impact in production, where initiatives will have the biggest impact.
Responsibility is a global task that we want to take part in. We understand that there is no finish line and that our goals will continue to adapt according to the changing world around us.
We are by no means perfect, but we are doing our part.
